No one and nothing can prepare you for becoming a parent, or equally hard, letting go as a parent. Nothing about parenting happens in a predictable fashion or as you imagine it. I am busy preparing myself for an empty nest while my children are still living with us. For so long my primary purpose has been my kids and my identity has been Mum. Now they are adults and beginning to make their own way in the world, I need to step back and let them fly solo. I will always and forever be there for them, but I need to let them live the life they choose and with whom they choose. I have no doubt they will continue to shine and I look forward to being a part of their lives in a different role.

“I don’t like the term “empty nesters.” I prefer “parents of free range adults.”
