My husband’s brother sadly passed away at age 32 from pancreatic cancer, leaving a wife and three young kids behind. Unbelievably his wife passed away a few years later, leaving my two nephews and niece without parents. My husband and I had been close to the family and spent much time together over the years. The eldest had struggled following his Dad’s passing and came to live with us just prior to my boys’ first birthday. Being a proxy parent is hard; damn hard, but we were never going to give up on family. He lived with us for four years, and difficult as it was, we would do it all again. People would ask how I could take him in when my twins hadn’t even had their first birthday, and my answer was how could you not? Family is family.
“Never do that by proxy which you can do yourself.”
