D day…

The day my twins were born was the happiest day of my life and when our world changed forever. I was booked in for a caesarean, and after a very early arrival at the hospital, followed by much waiting around, eventually we were ready to go to theatre for the big delivery. And theatre it was indeed, with a cast of many; doctors, nurses, medical students and of course my darling husband. It struck me as very strange that such a momentous occasion in our life was so mundane and matter of fact for others. To them it was just another day on the job, whilst for us it was miracle day. I was reassured that when the time came and the screen was lowered, I would only have eyes for my babies and not my organs that would be on display. I was sceptical, but after having an epidural, desperately asking for something to throw up in and then feeling the most bizarre, very strong wrenching and pulling sensation on my insides, one baby was pulled free, and two minutes later the other, I saw nothing but my precious babies. I clearly remember crying and then the interminable wait for them to be checked before being brought to me. Finally they were placed in my arms, and our life as a family began…

“You know you’re a mum of multiples when you see people with one baby having a hard time and think, “One baby? …I laugh at your ONE baby!”
