I was in shock!

It’s Xmas Day, 2002. My husband hands me a present, a white envelope. Thoughts rush through my head: tickets to Paris, or a show? A voucher to buy something I’ve always wanted? Imagine my face when I read the letter- telling me I had been given a ‘burial plot’ for Christmas. I kept looking at it, trying to make sense out of it. I looked at my husband and he said ‘it’s a practical gift.”

His father had recently passed away, and he subsequently purchased a 3 plot burial spot beside his parent’s plots. I sat there in stunned shock, the word “seriously?!” repeating through my brain. How do you react to that? Well I’ll tell you how I did (after the shock)- I looked him square in the eye and said ‘Darling, that’s so thoughtful of you, thank you.’ As it turns out, he had decided to buy the plot anyway, but thought it would be funny to see my reaction when giving it to me as a present! Well, he certainly got the mortified reaction he must have hoped for! The next day I went out and spent $150 on items I would have liked to have received from him for Xmas. To this day, my husband loves telling this story to friends. It has been a running joke ever since, with many friends advising me to watch my back!

    1. My husband thought so 🀣 And so did I really πŸ˜‚ Thanks so much for your comment 😊

  1. I well remember the time my partner (we are now married) sidled up to me on my birthday, looking extremely shfty. I thought “This is it” He’s going to proposed!”. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. He’d bought me a hedge trimmer! I guess this also falls into the “practical gift” category. He’s lucky his head remained connected to his shoulders!
Your post brough back that memory and made me smile.
