Magical Tuesday…

“The snow will continue through Monday but taper off into Tuesday, and then no more precipitation is expected. Tuesday will be partly cloudy with temperatures in the 40’s.

This was the weather forecast 18 months ago in Fussen, Germany on the day we visited Neuschwanstein Castle. Every holiday has its highlights and that particular day will forever be etched in my memory.

The five of us ( we had met up with my German girlfriend) set out in the falling snow to see the fairytale castle that towered majestically in the distance. Once we had toured through the castle we were extremely disappointed to find the path leading to the bridge that gives the optimum view of the castle closed. Unperturbed, my husband and girlfriend clambered over the gate whilst the boys and I watched, fully expecting the official who was standing nearby to stop them. To our amazement he turned away, so the boys and I quickly followed suit. My boys were stunned, asking me “who are you, and what have you done with our real Mum? ” ; I am generally a stickler for rules but I wasn’t coming half way around the world to be stopped by a mere sign! Quickly I countered with a favourite line of theirs from The Pirates of the Caribbean, stating I’m sure it wasn’t a rule, but more like guidelines!

We arrived at the bridge to find  it deserted and quickly took photos of the stunning views. Others at the castle soon saw us and consequently made their way to join us.
Tracey had visited here in Summer and said the bridge was so crowded you couldn’t move, so I was counting my blessings to have it to ourselves. Finally we began our descent back to the town of Hohenschwangau through the snow clad forest. The silence was deafening, almost surreal, and a myriad of snowflakes drifted softly from the trees, spiralling gently to the pristine path below. It was as if we were the only people in the world, and we ran and laughed and threw snowballs at each other in sheer delight. I made my fist ever snow angel, lying in the snow while my husband and boys laughed at my crazy antics.

It struck me then just how special the moment was, a time of sheer rapture that I will never forget. A small piece of heaven in a truly magical holiday.

“A memory is a photograph taken by the heart to make a special moment last forever.”
