Lemon, Lime & Bitters…

I’m not a big drinker, in fact my favorite alcoholic drink is sold as a soft drink in supermarkets. Lemon, Lime & Bitters is a sweet & sour refreshing drink all in one. In Australia, you can order it at cafes, bars & pubs everywhere & everyone knows exactly what it is. On a trip to the UK recently, I ordered a Lemon, Lime & Bitters drink over the counter at a pub and the bartender looked at me blankly; he had no idea what I was talking about. I explained that it was made up mainly of lemonade, lime cordial juice and *Angostura Bitters. He said he had all the ingredients and with my rough instructions on the measurements, he made a delicious Lemon, Lime & Bitters drink for me! He was very pleased to add a new drink to his beverage list.

*One of the most well-known bitters brands, Angostura, which was created in 1824, contains approximately 44.7 percent alcohol by volume. Since bitters is commonly added to foods and beverages by the drop and is considered potable, it is classified as a non-alcoholic food ingredient.

Ingredients for Lemon, Lime & Bitters:

  • 1.25 litres lemonade, chilled
  • 1/2 cup lime juice cordial
  • 1 teaspoon Angostura Bitters (see note)
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • Angostura Bitters and lemon slices, to serve
  • Step 1
Combine lemonade, cordial and bitters in a jug. Divide ice between 4 glasses. Shake a few drops of bitters into each glass. Top with lemonade mixture. Serve with lemon slices.
